Spring training in Mesa AZ for snowbirds centers on two ballparks: Sloan Park, spring home of the Chicago Cubs, and Hohokam Stadium, home of the Athletics. Tempe Diablo, Scottsdale Stadium and Salt River Fields add four more teams nearby, and the official 2027 Cactus League schedule opens Friday, February 19.

I am Terry Day, REALTOR® with DeLex Realty. Buyers who winter in Mesa and the rest of the East Valley often ask me which ballpark is near the home they are considering, not which team I cheer for. This page covers the East Valley group of Cactus League parks. If you are looking on the other side of town, I have a separate West Valley spring training guide for the Sun City area.
East Valley ballparks and who plays where
The official Cactus League site lists 10 stadiums hosting 15 MLB teams. Six of those teams train at these five East Valley ballparks:
- Sloan Park, Mesa: Spring home of the Chicago Cubs.
- Hohokam Stadium, Mesa: Spring home of the Athletics, at 1235 N. Center Street. The A's page says the team and the City of Mesa host spring training there, and it mentions shaded terrace level and down the line areas.
- Tempe Diablo Stadium, Tempe: Spring home of the Los Angeles Angels, at 2200 West Alameda Drive. The City of Tempe says the Angels will stay through at least 2035 under a City Council approved agreement that includes a major renovation.
- Scottsdale Stadium, Scottsdale: Spring home of the San Francisco Giants.
- Salt River Fields at Talking Stick: Shared by the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies, each with its own half of the complex. It opened in 2011 on Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community land, near Indian Bend and Pima Road, and the D-backs call it the first major league spring training facility built on tribal land.
The other five Cactus League parks are in Phoenix, Glendale, Goodyear, Peoria and Surprise. If your team trains out there, tell me early so I do not focus only on Mesa and Scottsdale.
2027 schedule: what is posted so far
MLB announced in September 2026 that all 30 teams are set to open spring training games on the same day, February 19, 2027. The Cactus League site lists 229 games for February and March 2027, with the full schedule linked there.
- Athletics: Local news reports the A's open Friday, February 19, against the Chicago Cubs at Hohokam Stadium.
- Diamondbacks: Arizona Sports reports a February 19 split squad day, with one group hosting the Rockies and the other playing the Giants.
One caution. Several news outlets report that the current MLB collective bargaining agreement expires December 1, 2026, and that the 2027 schedule assumes labor peace. I am not predicting anything. I am only saying to check the team's official page again in January before you book guests around a game.
How I help snowbirds plan around ballparks
I do not sell tickets and I do not quote prices. What I do is match the house to your routine. If a morning at Sloan Park or Hohokam is part of your week, we look at the route from each home we tour, on the actual day, instead of relying on a guess. Leisure World in Mesa is one age-restricted community buyers ask me about, and the Arizona 55+ living hub covers others across the Valley. Age rules for any 55+ community are set in its CC&Rs.
Practical tips I give clients:
- Check the 2027 schedule on the team's MLB page and on cactusleague.com before you plan.
- Read the ballpark's own page for parking, transportation and accessibility details.
- Plan shade and water for afternoon games. Some ballparks list shaded sections, so check your seats.
- Read the rainout policy. The Giants say weather cancellations at Scottsdale Stadium are not rescheduled.
- If family will stay with you for a series, check your community's guest and parking rules in the CC&Rs.
- Buy tickets through official team or league channels so seat and refund rules are clear.
What snowbirds forget before opening day
The house search and the baseball calendar run into each other in February and March. Guests need a place to park, and community rules may limit how long visitors can stay. If adult children are coming for a weekend series, ask me for the floor plan on any home with a guest room setup you like.
For other things to do during the season, see my snowbird events calendar for the Phoenix area.

Questions buyers ask
Which Cactus League teams play in Mesa?
Two teams train in Mesa. The Chicago Cubs play at Sloan Park and the Athletics play at Hohokam Stadium, according to the Cactus League's official site. Tempe Diablo Stadium (Angels), Scottsdale Stadium (Giants) and Salt River Fields (Diamondbacks and Rockies) round out the East Valley group.
When does 2027 spring training start?
MLB and the Cactus League list Friday, February 19, 2027, as opening day, with all 30 teams scheduled to play that day. News reports note the players' labor agreement expires December 1, 2026, so check the official schedule again over the winter.
Do you list ticket prices or drive times?
No. Buy tickets through the team, the ballpark or the Cactus League, and check each ballpark's own page for parking and accessibility details. Drive times depend on your address and the day's traffic, so I map them with you on tour day.
Are any games rescheduled if it rains?
Not always. The Giants' Scottsdale Stadium rainout policy says spring games canceled for weather will not be rescheduled, and it explains how credits work. Each team sets its own policy, so read the one for your ballpark.
Can you help me find a 55+ home in the East Valley near these ballparks?
Yes. Call me at 602-483-4665, tell me which teams and ballparks matter most, and I will build a tour list of age-restricted and active adult options around them.
