New and returning golfers in the Sun Cities usually start with a lesson or clinic run through their own community's golf system. Sun City uses RCSC golf, Sun City West uses RCSCW Golf Operations and its Golf Lab, and Sun City Grand runs its own four courses. Leagues come next, often with a handicap.

Golf lessons in the Sun Cities at a glance

  • Sun City: RCSC golf lessons page and pro shops; PGA.com has listed Get Golf Ready beginner series at the Sun City Recreation Centers.
  • Sun City West: RCSCW private lessons, GreenTeam group lessons, one-hour clinics of up to 10 students, and club fitting at the Golf Lab at Grandview.
  • Sun City Grand: Four courses (Cimarron, Desert Springs, Granite Falls North and Granite Falls South) with separate resident and public tee times.
  • Leagues: Men's, women's, 9-hole and 18-hole clubs in each community, many with a handicap requirement.
  • Fees: Not listed here. Confirm on the official golf pages.

I am Terry Day, REALTOR with DeLex Realty. Golf-minded buyers ask me two things: where can I take a clinic after years away from the game, and how do I get into a league once I can get around the course. The answer is different in each of the three Sun Cities, because each one runs its own golf system.

Sun City (RCSC): lessons and beginner clinics

The Recreation Centers of Sun City (RCSC) keeps a golf lessons page inside its golf courses and pro shops section at suncityaz.org. That site does not always load, so the most reliable route is often a phone call or a visit to an RCSC pro shop, where staff can tell you which instructors are teaching this season and where.

For true beginners and people coming back to the game, PGA.com has listed Get Golf Ready for Adults series at the Sun City Recreation Centers, led by a PGA coach. The format described there is four weekly sessions of about an hour each. It covers the putting green, chipping, wedges and irons on the practice tees and on the course, plus the practical side of golf: what to wear, how to book a tee time and basic etiquette. Range balls are provided, and equipment is available if you do not own clubs yet. Session dates change, so ask for the current calendar rather than relying on an old flyer.

One more thing to know: in Sun City, golf runs through RCSC, which is tied to the recreation card that comes with ownership in Sun City. League clubs build on that. The Sun City Riverview Ladies 9 Hole Club, for example, plays Tuesdays at the Riverview course on Del Webb Boulevard, welcomes women golfers of all levels, and asks for a valid RCSC card and a World Handicap System handicap, which members can establish after joining.

Sun City West (RCSCW): lessons, clinics and the Golf Lab

The Recreation Centers of Sun City West publish a Lessons and Clinics page at suncitywest.com that lays out the options clearly:

  • Private lessons: 45-minute sessions with RCSCW instructors, several of them PGA Professionals.
  • Group lessons: offered through the GreenTeam program.
  • Clinics: one-hour sessions capped at 10 students, with no more than six students per instructor.
  • Club fitting and repair: through the Golf Lab at Grandview Golf Course on Meeker Road.

Residents and non-residents can both book private instruction, at different rates, and booking runs through the RCSCW web portal or directly with the instructor. RCSCW's instructor page notes that some of its pros run Get Golf Ready clinics, and one instructor teaches adaptive swing techniques for golfers with physical limitations. If you are returning after an injury or surgery, check with your doctor first, then ask the golf desk which instructor fits.

Sun City West has seven RCSCW courses: Deer Valley, Grandview, Pebblebrook, Trail Ridge, Desert Trails, Echo Mesa and Stardust. The chartered golf clubs listed on scwclubs.com are organized around those courses. Examples:

  • Desert Trails Women's Golf Club: Tuesday play on an 18-hole executive course, with both 9-hole and 18-hole leagues, and new members can try the club three times before joining.
  • Men's Niners: a Thursday nine-hole competitive club sponsored by the Sun City West Golf Council. Members establish a nine-hole USGA handicap. Winter play is at Stardust, and summer play rotates between the executive courses that stay open.
  • Course-based clubs: men's and women's clubs at Trail Ridge, Stardust, Deer Valley, Pebblebrook and others.

Sun City Grand: four courses and resident clubs

Sun City Grand in Surprise, which its own site at livegrandaz.com calls The Grand, is not part of either RCSC system. Its golf page lists four courses: Cimarron, Desert Springs, Granite Falls North and Granite Falls South. Residents book resident tee times online through the Chelsea reservation system, and the public books through separate public tee-time links. Starting times shift with the season, so the community posts a golf calendar.

The Grand's golf page does not describe a lesson or clinic program, so ask at the golf shop who teaches and how. PGA.com coach listings show private instruction based at the Desert Springs golf shop, which is a reasonable place to start your questions.

For league play, amateur golf listings name the Sun City Grand Men's Club (the Grand Men's 18-Hole Golf Club), which plays mostly on Wednesdays across the four courses, plus resident men's and resident ladies' groups and women's clubs such as the Ladies Grand Niners. Membership forms and requirements come from each club, so ask before you count on a particular play day.

From first clinic to weekly league: the usual path

The paperwork differs in each community, but the steps look much the same:

  1. Confirm the golf privileges that come with the home you are buying, through RCSC, RCSCW or The Grand.
  2. Take a clinic or a short series of private lessons until a few holes feel comfortable.
  3. Set up a handicap if the league you like asks for one. Several clubs let you do this after joining.
  4. Ask about 9-hole and 18-hole options, and executive versus regulation courses.
  5. Try a club before committing, where the club allows it, and read its cart and guest rules.

Buying tips for golf-first clients

Buyers who have not played in years often focus on living on a fairway. A better first step is picking the lesson path: a beginner clinic, private instruction or a returning-player tune-up. Then we look at homes near the course or practice area that runs that program. Visit the range during posted hours, not only the model home or the open house. Compare the three Sun Cities as separate systems, not as one interchangeable golf card. All three are age-restricted 55+ communities, with the rules set out in each community's CC&Rs.

Do Sun City, Sun City West and Sun City Grand share one golf card?
