Volunteer opportunities for Scottsdale seniors run through city departments, the public library, hospital campuses and town programs in Fountain Hills and Cave Creek. Most roles open after an application, interview or orientation, and a few, like Scottsdale Police volunteering, are not taking applications right now, so check each live page first.

Start with the City of Scottsdale volunteer page

When clients ask me where to begin, I send them to the City of Scottsdale Volunteer Opportunities page. It lists each program by department with a contact name, a phone number and a plain status of accepting or not accepting applications.

When I checked it in November 2026, the roles marked as accepting included:

  • Senior Centers: concierge, blood pressure screening support, meal programs, computer lab, peer support and special events at Via Linda and Granite Reef Senior Centers.
  • Library: storytimes, the Library Shops, customer service, outreach, computer help and shelving. The city notes that openings vary with need.
  • Fire Department: presenting prevention and safety programs, helping at events, and office and customer service tasks.
  • McDowell Sonoran Preserve: steward work such as trail projects, cactus salvage and weed removal, run with the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy.
  • Pinnacle Peak Park: trail rovers, trail sweepers, trail maintenance, visitor center attendants and interpretive leaders.
  • McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park: the Track Pack, with station stewards, depot docents and special event help.
  • Old Town Ambassadors: three-hour shifts at information carts helping visitors find restaurants, sights and shops.
  • Human Services: the Vista del Camino food bank, the Day Relief Center and Operation Fix It home repair help.

Programs not taking applications right now

The same page showed several programs as not accepting applications. The one people ask me about most is the Scottsdale Police Department. Its volunteer roles cover clerical support and helping patrol with vehicle transport, and the city says volunteers must be Citizen Academy graduates.

Also listed as not accepting when I checked: Adaptive Recreation coaching, Adopt-a-Family and Vista del Camino Homework Help. These statuses change during the year, so treat my list as a snapshot and read the live page before you plan around any of them.

Fountain Hills volunteering

The Town of Fountain Hills runs volunteering through a Volunteer Coordinator at the Community Center on La Montana Drive (480-816-5108). The town page lists programs including Give a Lift Senior Transportation, the Home Delivered Meal Program, Community Services Special Events, the Crisis Response Team, Adopt a Street, Make a Difference Day, Day of Giving and the Sonoran Conservancy.

The process works a little differently from Scottsdale. You fill out one town volunteer application, then the town reviews it, interviews you and places you based on your skills and its needs. The town notes that sensitive roles may call for a background check and a DMV record check. The page does not show a per-program accepting status, so ask the coordinator what is open.

Cave Creek and Carefree volunteering

The Town of Cave Creek lists one town-run role, trail maintenance, with a staff contact on its Volunteer Opportunities page. The same page lists local organizations looking for help, including the Desert Foothills Library, Foothills Caring Corps, Foothills Food Bank, Desert Foothills Land Trust, Cave Creek Museum, Desert Awareness Park and several animal rescue groups.

For Carefree, I could not find a town-run volunteer program on the official town site. The town does post a Non Profits and Resources page and a Boards and Commissions page. Carefree and Cave Creek share many of the same foothills nonprofits, so the Cave Creek list is a practical starting point for Carefree residents too. Call Town Hall at 480-488-3686 to ask about town board openings.

Hospital volunteering: HonorHealth and Mayo Clinic Arizona

HonorHealth has three Scottsdale medical centers in its volunteer handbook: Shea, Osborn and Thompson Peak. Its adult program is for ages 18 and up. It lists patient-facing roles such as information desks, nursing units, surgery and procedure areas and the Cancer Center Boutique, plus non-patient roles like the gift shop, clerical work and the Desert Mission Food Bank.

HonorHealth asks for a commitment of at least six months or 100 hours, and most roles need a regular schedule. The steps are an online application, an interview, a health screening, a background check, new volunteer orientation and training in your service area. Volunteer Services can be reached at 480-583-0819.

Mayo Clinic Arizona runs one volunteer program for its Phoenix and Scottsdale campuses. Adult volunteers must be 18 or older and not enrolled in school. Mayo asks for at least four hours a week and at least six months of service each year. Roles include wayfinding, help with patient preparation, clerical support and daily operations, and Mayo says volunteers do not give direct patient care. Onboarding includes an interview, an Occupational Health visit, a general orientation and one-on-one training.

How to sign up without the runaround

  1. Pick one or two interests: a senior center, the library, trails, a hospital desk or a foothills nonprofit.
  2. Open the official page and check the status line or ask the coordinator what is open.
  3. Complete the application or interest form the page names.
  4. Plan for an interview, orientation and any health screening or background check the program lists.
  5. Be honest about travel months. Hospital programs ask for six months or more, and many city roles keep set schedules.

Home features that make a volunteer schedule easier

Volunteering does not change how you buy a home, but it can shape which features matter. Clients with regular shifts often ask me for a garage with room for a second car, a small office or flex room for board paperwork, and a low-maintenance yard if they travel part of the year. The age rules for a 55+ community are set in that community's CC&Rs and have nothing to do with volunteering.

Questions people ask

Where do Scottsdale seniors start volunteering?
The City of Scottsdale Volunteer Opportunities page is the best first stop. It lists senior center, library, parks, preserve and human services roles, each with a contact and an accepting or not accepting status.

Is Scottsdale Police taking volunteer applications?
Not when I checked in November 2026. The city lists Police Department volunteering as not accepting, and it requires Citizen Academy graduation. New openings are posted on the police website.

How does volunteering work in Fountain Hills?
You submit one town volunteer application. The Volunteer Coordinator reviews it, interviews you and places you in a program such as Give a Lift or Home Delivered Meals.

What do HonorHealth and Mayo Clinic ask of new volunteers?
Both programs are for adults 18 and up and ask for about six months of service, plus an interview, health screening and orientation. HonorHealth also runs a background check.

Is volunteering required to live in a 55+ community?
No. Age rules in a 55+ community come from its CC&Rs. City, hospital and nonprofit volunteering is separate and open to residents of any neighborhood.
