The best-documented cycling club in the Sun Cities is the Sun City West Cyclists Club, a chartered RCSCW club whose weekday rides leave from the Echo Mesa Golf Course parking lot. In Sun City, local news has covered a Sun City Cycling Club, and at The Grand in Surprise the Grand Hikers Club runs weekly hikes.

Sun City West Cyclists
The Sun City West Cyclists Club has a long history. Its history page says several Sun City West residents started a bike club called the "Crestview Riders" in 1979, and by 1981 it had grown enough to become a chartered club within the Recreation Centers of Sun City West.
According to the club site, weekday rides start from the Echo Mesa Golf Course parking lot at 20349 N. Echo Mesa Drive in Sun City West. Start times change with the seasons, so check the club's start times page before your first ride, and plan to arrive about 10 minutes early so a member can answer questions. Riders split into groups shortly before departure, with paces ranging from relaxed up to 19+ mph. The club says rides generally last about an hour with a mid-ride break, all bike types are welcome, and it also offers off-campus rides, adventure trips and social gatherings.
To ride, the club lists a current Sun City West recreation card, a bicycle, a helmet and annual dues. Its riding policies are specific: helmets are required, rear-view mirrors are recommended, riders obey all traffic laws including full stops at stop signs, and they ride single file on busy main roads. Earbuds are not allowed in the group. Confirm current dues on the club site; I do not list fees here.
Sun City and The Grand
In the original Sun City, the Sun City Independent has covered a Sun City Cycling Club. A December 2017 article reported the club adding a Tuesday ride for casual cyclists, starting at Sundial Recreation Center, on top of its regular Thursday rides. A 2022 article described the club's overnight "12 Hours of Sun City" challenge on an eight-mile loop inside Sun City. Those reports are a few years old, so check the Recreation Centers of Sun City club directory or a recreation center front desk for the club's current ride schedule.
At The Grand in Surprise, the community says it has more than 60 chartered clubs and interest groups. I could not confirm a cycling club in its current listings, but the Grand Hikers Club is active. Its site says membership is open to Grand residents in good standing with Grand Community Association, new hikers complete an introductory hike first, club hikes are typically on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and slower-paced EZ hikes run on Wednesdays. Hiking footwear is required on all club hikes. If you want hikes outside the club, see my list of easy hikes for seniors in Phoenix.
In Sun City West, the Sportsmans Club also lists hiking among its outdoor activities. For a wider look at what each recreation system offers, my Sun City clubs and activities guide is a good next stop.
Walking paths and trails in and around the Sun Cities
I could not confirm a standalone walking club on the current club directories, so plan your walking around paths and trails instead. Many walkers in age-restricted communities use neighborhood streets and recreation center grounds; if paths near home are a priority, my post on communities with parks and walking paths in Phoenix compares options across the Valley.
White Tank Mountain Regional Park
Maricopa County lists about 30 miles of shared-use trails at White Tank Mountain Regional Park, with routes from 0.9 to 7.9 miles and easy to strenuous difficulty. The county says all trails are multi-use unless otherwise designated, and about 2.5 miles, including the Waterfall and Black Rock trails, are for pedestrians only, so bikes stay off those. There is also an approximately 10-mile Competitive Track meant for higher-speed activities and organized events. The county listed the Trailhead Staging area as closed April 13 through November 8, 2026, so check the park page for current status.
The Maricopa Trail
The county says the Maricopa Trail is 315 miles long and links its regional parks in one big loop. The county describes it as accommodating runners, walkers, cyclists, inline skaters and equestrians. Segments can close temporarily, so check county alerts before you plan a ride.
Peoria trails near Skunk Creek
In Peoria, the city opened New River Trail improvements in October 2025, according to the Peoria Times, including a pedestrian bridge across Skunk Creek Wash near the Peoria Sports Complex and the Stadium Trail between 75th and 83rd avenues along the north side of the wash. Check the City of Peoria for current trail maps and hours.
Golf cart and bike rules, stated factually
Bikes and golf carts share the road in the Sun Cities, so the rules matter. Under Arizona law (A.R.S. 28-812), a person riding a bicycle on a roadway or shoulder has the rights and duties of a vehicle driver, except where bicycle-specific rules apply.
For golf carts in Sun City, the Sun City Home Owners Association says carts must follow the same rules of the road as vehicles, including stopping at lights and stop signs, must be registered with the state, and drivers need a valid driver license. The HOA passes along the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office recommendation to stay on roads with speed limits of 35 mph or less, and it names Bell Road, Grand Avenue and 99th Avenue as higher-speed roads. Carts should yield and keep to the far right. If you plan a cart shade or driveway change, the HOA says to check with its Compliance Team so the work meets the CC&Rs. For the state rules on making a cart street legal, see my post on street-legal golf carts in Arizona. This is general information, not legal advice.
What to look for in a home if you ride or walk
Who it fits, by home features: a single-level home with garage room for bikes, a cart or both, close to the recreation center your club rides from. Who it does not fit: a buyer who needs a dedicated protected bike lane on every street, since many Sun Cities routes are shared roads. Tour early in the morning, when riders and walkers are out, and measure garage depth before you write an offer. Sun City, Sun City West and The Grand are separate recreation systems, so the club you want decides which community to search.
