Dance, choral, band and music clubs in the Sun Cities are chartered clubs run by residents inside each community's recreation system. Sun City, Sun City West and Sun City Grand each keep separate club lists and separate cards, so the club you want decides which community, and which rec center, belongs on your home search.
Sun Cities dance and music clubs at a glance
- Sun City (RCSC): Rhythm Ramblers big band dances at Sundial, Sun City Concert Band and Sun City Women's Chorus, with rehearsals reported at the Fairway Recreation Center.
- Sun City West (RCSCW): Westernaires chorus, Music Club, Theatre West, DanceSensations, Country Western, Line Dancers and Rock n Roll Dance Club.
- Sun City Grand: chartered Dance Club, Music Club and Drama & Comedy Club.
- Joining: each community ties club membership to its own recreation or activity card.
- Costs: dues and admissions change, so check the current club page. This page lists no fees.
I am Terry Day, a REALTOR with DeLex Realty. Buyers moving to the northwest Valley often tell me they want a home near "the dance floor" or "where the chorus rehearses." That only helps once we know the actual club and the building that hosts it. This guide names clubs I could confirm on official club pages or in local news coverage, then walks through how chartered clubs work in general terms.
For the wider list of hobbies, sports and social groups, see Sun City clubs and activities. If you also want stage shows, galleries and concerts across the metro, see theater and arts for retirees in Phoenix.
How chartered clubs work, in general terms
A chartered club is a resident-led group that the recreation organization officially recognizes. The club elects officers, keeps bylaws and books rooms in community buildings. In return, it follows the organization's rules on membership, guests and room use. The details differ by community, but the pattern is similar:
- Get the right card. Club membership follows the community's card. The Sun City Concert Band and the Sun City Women's Chorus are open to RCSC cardholders, the Country Western Dance Club in Sun City West is open to SCW Rec and Tenant cardholding residents, and Sun City Grand's policies say chartered club membership is open to any person with a valid association activity card.
- Find the club on the official directory. Use suncityaz.org for Sun City, scwclubs.com for Sun City West and livegrandaz.com for Sun City Grand.
- Ask about guest or trial visits. Sun City Grand allows a prospective member or guest to attend a chartered club function up to three times per calendar year. Other clubs set their own guest rules.
- Join the club itself. A rec card gets you eligibility, but most clubs also have their own membership form and annual dues. Check the current amount with the club.
- Read the bylaws. Bylaws cover meetings, officer elections and, for performing groups, how seats or parts are filled.
One more general point: in Sun City Grand, chartered club performances and participation are for club members, and non-members dancing or performing need approval from the club board and the Activities Manager. Expect similar member-first rules elsewhere, and ask before you bring visiting family to a dance.
Sun City (RCSC): big band dances, concert band and chorus
Rhythm Ramblers. The Sun City Independent describes the Rhythm Ramblers as Sun City's original big band and first chartered club, started in 1963. The band holds a concert and dance series at the Sundial Recreation Center auditorium during the season. Membership is open to RCSC cardholders whether or not they play an instrument, and members can bring escorted guests to dances.
Sun City Concert Band. According to the Sun City Independent, the concert band rehearses in the music room at the Fairway Recreation Center during the fall-through-spring season, with concerts at Sundial Auditorium and the Sun Bowl. Club membership is open to RCSC cardholders and invited guests.
Sun City Women's Chorus. Local coverage reports that the chorus rehearses in the Fairway music room and holds concerts at Sundial Auditorium. The chorus says it welcomes all women who love to sing, and membership is open to RCSC cardholders.
Dance clubs. RCSC keeps a dance clubs section on suncityaz.org with separate club pages. Those pages did not load for me during this update, so I am not naming them here. Open the RCSC dance clubs page or stop by a recreation center office for the current list, halls and lesson nights.
Sun City West (RCSCW): chorus, music and lots of dance
The Sun City West club directory on scwclubs.com groups clubs by category. Under Performing Arts it lists the Westernaires, Theatre West and DanceSensations. Under Fitness and Dance it lists the Rock n Roll Dance Club, Line Dancers and Country Western. The Music Club sits under Hobbies.
- Westernaires. A mixed-voice chorus, chartered since 1980, that meets at the Kuentz Recreation Center and performs at the Stardust Theatre.
- Country Western Dance Club. Offers both line dance and partner dance lessons at the R.H. Johnson Social Hall. Membership is open to SCW Rec and Tenant cardholding residents.
- DanceSensations. Local coverage describes jazz, tap, ballet, hula and clogging classes in the dance studio at the Palm Ridge Activities Building. Class lineups change, so check the club.
- Line Dancers and Rock n Roll Dance Club. Both are listed in the RCSCW directory. Check each club site for current times and halls.
Sun City West club questions can also go to the RCSCW administrative offices on R.H. Johnson Boulevard. More on the community itself is on my moving to Sun City West page.
Sun City Grand: Dance Club and Music Club
Sun City Grand in Surprise is managed separately from both RCSC and RCSCW. Its clubs page lists a chartered Dance Club, Music Club and Drama & Comedy Club under performing arts, and says each chartered club has at least 100 members. Sun City Grand also has smaller, informal interest groups that are separate from chartered clubs.
Local coverage has shown the Dance Club hosting ballroom-style dances with live bands and pre-dance lessons at Sonoran Plaza, and the Music Club staging resident music shows with soloists and ensembles. Check the Grand events calendar for what is on this season. If Sun City Grand is on your list, see Sun City Grand homes for sale.
Choosing a home around your club
Club life happens in specific buildings. Sun City has several recreation centers spread across the community, and Sun City West and Sun City Grand each have their own set. If the concert band rehearses at Fairway and the big band dances at Sundial, those two buildings matter more than a general map of the community.
- Start with the club, then the building. Tell me the club and the hall, and I will focus the search around it.
- Visit before you write an offer. A guest or prospective member visit, where allowed, tells you more than a flyer does.
- Check card rules for renters. Sun City West's Country Western club, for example, names Tenant cardholders as eligible. Confirm how the card works if you plan to rent first.
- Read the CC&Rs. Sun City, Sun City West and Sun City Grand are age-restricted communities. Occupancy rules are in each community's CC&Rs, and club rules do not change them.
