When people search for a Sun City AZ library, they are often surprised to learn there is more than one, and that the rules differ by community. Some locations take a county library card. One uses your recreation card as the library card. One is run by a city. I am Terry Day with DeLex Realty, and I walk buyers through details like this when they compare the Sun Cities. Here is what the official sources say today.

Sun City: two county branches inside recreation centers

Sun City Library. Maricopa County Library District lists Sun City Library at 16828 N. 99th Avenue, Sun City, AZ 85351, at the cross streets of 99th Avenue and Bell Road, inside the Bell Recreation Center. According to the district, a private library operated in the building starting in 1972, and the county district took over operations in May 2009. The county page lists Wi-Fi in the building and parking lot, public computers and printing, a drive-up book drop and a Friends of the Library bookstore.

Fairway Library. The district also lists Fairway Library at 10600 W. Peoria Avenue, Sun City, AZ 85351. It sits inside the Fairway Recreation Center, next to the center's main entrance, at the corner of Peoria Avenue and 107th Avenue. The district says it opened in 2010. Services listed include computers and printing, Wi-Fi, a walk-up book drop and events, including the Friends of the Library bookstore.

Because both are county branches, they run on Maricopa County Library District cards and policies. That is a different setup from Sun City West, where the library is part of the recreation centers. If you are looking at homes in Sun City, my moving to Sun City AZ guide covers the recreation centers these libraries sit inside.

Sun City West: R.H. Johnson Library

The R.H. Johnson Library is at 13801 W. Meeker Boulevard, Sun City West, AZ 85375. It is part of the Recreation Centers of Sun City West (RCSCW), not the county system. The RCSCW library page says it is run by a paid staff along with a large group of volunteers, with support from the Friends of the R.H. Johnson Library.

Access is the key point for buyers. The official page states that an RCSCW Recreation Card is required to enter and check out materials, and puts it simply: your Rec Card is your Library Card. The page notes that printing, scanning and copying are available to Rec Card holders and guests at its Data Resource Center. If you have a visitor in town, ask the library about current guest rules first.

The library page describes a broad collection, including regular and large-print books, books on CD, puzzles, board games, periodicals, movies and a digital collection through Overdrive and Libby. It also describes a homebound program that mails library items to members who cannot get to the building, study rooms that can be reserved, and one-on-one tech help. For more on daily life there, see my moving to Sun City West AZ guide.

Sun City Grand and Surprise: the city library system

Sun City Grand is in the City of Surprise. The closest large public library is Surprise Regional Library at 16089 N. Bullard Avenue, Surprise, AZ 85374. It opened in 2002 as Northwest Regional Library, a branch co-opened by the City of Surprise and Maricopa County Library District.

That changed in 2023. The City of Surprise announced that it would take over management of its three libraries (Northwest Regional, Asante and Hollyhock) from the county district under a new Surprise Public Library System, with Northwest Regional renamed Surprise Regional Library. The city said at the time that a Surprise Public Library System card would be needed to check out materials at its branches. Card rules can change, so confirm the current policy with the city library before you sign up.

I could not confirm a resident library inside Sun City Grand from an official source this round, so I have left that out. If you are considering the Grand, my Sun City Grand homes page is a good starting point, and I am glad to help you ask the association directly.

What the libraries offer, in general terms

Programs change through the year, so I describe them in general terms and point you to each live calendar. Based on the official pages, you can expect some mix of the following:

  • Print and large-print books, audiobooks, movies and digital titles
  • Public computers, printing and Wi-Fi where offered
  • Friends of the Library bookstores and volunteer support
  • Puzzles, games and specialty items at some locations (the county branches list memory kits, a seed library and ukuleles)
  • Tech help, events and occasional children's story times for visiting grandchildren

Libraries also run on volunteers. If that interests you, my post on volunteer opportunities in Sun City AZ is a good next read.

How this fits a home search

In Sun City, a county card works at branches inside the recreation centers. In Sun City West, the library is tied to your Rec Card. In Surprise, the library is run by the city. My Sun City vs Sun City West vs Sun City Grand comparison lays out the bigger differences.

All three are age-restricted communities, and occupancy rules are set in each community's CC&Rs. Library rules do not change those housing rules.
