Getting around without driving in Sun City, Sun City West and Surprise usually means combining a few programs: a volunteer driver service, a city dial-a-ride if you live in Surprise, and a referral desk that sorts out the rest. Which ones you can use depends on your address, your age and, for some programs, enrollment.

Senior transportation in the Sun Cities at a glance

  • Volunteer drivers: Northwest Valley Connect (AllThrive 365) serves Sun City, Sun City West, El Mirage, Youngtown and parts of Peoria and Surprise.
  • Enrolled member rides: Benevilla Bridges offers limited rides to medical appointments and the grocery store for qualifying low-income older adults.
  • Surprise residents: the City of Surprise runs Dial-A-Ride and a RideChoice and Paratransit program page.
  • Sun City West referrals: the Sun City West Foundation's Find Your Ride helps residents choose an option. It does not drive anyone.
  • Countywide help: Area Agency on Aging, Region One runs a 24-Hour Senior HELP LINE.

I'm Terry Day with DeLex Realty. I help people buy homes in the northwest Valley, and transportation comes up often when someone is planning for a time when they may drive less. I don't book rides or enroll anyone in these programs. What I can do is point you to the official sources so you can check them before you choose a neighborhood. For a wider list of senior resources (senior centers, the HELP LINE and more), see my West Valley senior services starter list. This page goes deeper on rides only.

Why your address matters

Sun City and Sun City West are unincorporated communities in Maricopa County. Surprise is an incorporated city with its own transit program. Two homes a few streets apart can sit on different sides of a city line, and that can change which ride programs are open to you. Volunteer programs also draw their own service boundaries, and some cover only parts of Peoria and Surprise.

So the first step is simple: once you have a specific property in mind, ask each program below whether that exact address is inside its service area.

Volunteer driver programs

Northwest Valley Connect (AllThrive 365). AllThrive 365 operates Northwest Valley Connect, a transportation program for people with limited transportation options in Sun City, Sun City West, El Mirage, Youngtown and portions of Peoria and Surprise. Its enrollment section lists an age requirement of 65 or older, and the program decides eligibility. Riders need to be able to walk or transfer into and out of the vehicle on their own; otherwise a caregiver must enroll as well.

A few things the program's own page makes clear:

  • Volunteer driver rides should be requested at least 7 days ahead.
  • Riders are told 3 days ahead whether a volunteer is available.
  • Because volunteers provide the trips, rides are not guaranteed.
  • Rides are donation-based, and cancellations need at least 24 hours' notice.
  • Group trips are also offered with at least 3 business days' notice.

Enrollment and questions go to the number on the AllThrive 365 transportation page (623-282-9300 when I checked). Ask them about trip purposes they support and whether a caregiver can ride along.

Benevilla Bridges. Benevilla, a nonprofit based in the West Valley, describes Benevilla Bridges as an enrollment-based program for qualifying low-income older adults. Enrolled members receive limited transportation to medical appointments and the grocery store, provided by volunteers. Benevilla's page does not spell out a service area, so call Benevilla to confirm whether your address and situation qualify.

If you live in Surprise

The City of Surprise has a RideChoice and Paratransit Program page that covers its Dial-A-Ride service, along with sections on ADA certified riders and veterans, Valley Metro Paratransit, and RideChoice taxi service. The city says Dial-A-Ride is available to Surprise residents and can carry riders who use wheelchairs.

The booking rule worth knowing: riders who are ADA certified, seniors and others with disabilities can reserve trips up to 14 days ahead, while other riders book same-day trips based on availability. Check the city page for the current application steps and contact numbers, since those sit in separate tabs.

If you're weighing Sun City Grand (which is in Surprise) against Sun City or Sun City West, this is one real difference to look at. My Sun City vs. Sun City West vs. Sun City Grand comparison covers the other differences, and you can browse Sun City Grand homes separately.

Valley Metro paratransit and RideChoice

Valley Metro is the regional transit agency, and its ADA paratransit and RideChoice programs come up on both the Surprise city page and the Sun City West Foundation's referral page. Eligibility and the rules for RideChoice differ by community. I couldn't open Valley Metro's own pages when I wrote this, so I'm not going to describe their rules here. Go straight to valleymetro.org, or ask Find Your Ride or the HELP LINE to walk you through what applies to your address.

Referral help that sorts out the options

Find Your Ride (Sun City West Foundation). This is a free referral service for Sun City West residents. It does not provide rides. Trained staff help you figure out which local options fit, such as Valley Metro RideChoice, Dial-a-Ride, ride-share apps and other ADA-compliant programs, and they explain eligibility and next steps. The Foundation also offers a downloadable Ride Resources guide and a monthly support class. The Find Your Ride helpline is 602-662-4260, Monday through Thursday mornings, according to the Foundation's page.

Area Agency on Aging, Region One. The agency's 24-Hour Senior HELP LINE (602-264-4357) is a good first call anywhere in Maricopa County, including Sun City and Surprise. It can point you to resources serving your address. The agency also lists a toll-free line and a text option on its site.

How I'd use this during a home search

If rides without driving matter to your plan, here is the order I suggest:

  • Narrow to a few addresses first, since service areas are address-based.
  • Call Northwest Valley Connect to ask whether each address is covered and how enrollment works.
  • If you're looking in Surprise, read the city's RideChoice and Paratransit page.
  • If you're looking in Sun City West, call Find Your Ride for a walk-through of options.
  • Ask the community association whether any shuttle exists. Don't assume one does.
  • Keep the Senior HELP LINE number handy for anything else.

Sun City, Sun City West and Sun City Grand are age-restricted communities, and the age rules live in each community's CC&Rs. Buying in one does not enroll you in any transportation program. You apply to each program separately. For more on the communities themselves, see moving to Sun City, moving to Sun City West, or the Arizona 55+ living hub. If rides to medical appointments are a priority, my post on hospitals near Sun City may help too.

What this page leaves out

I don't list fares, donation amounts, trip limits or ratings of any program. Those change, and the programs themselves are the right source. If a newsletter or flyer disagrees with an official site, trust the official site and call the number it lists.
