I am Terry Day, REALTOR® with DeLex Realty. East Valley 55+ buyers ask me about hospitals almost as often as they ask about golf and pickleball. This page covers Sun Lakes, Leisure World in Mesa, Trilogy at Power Ranch in Gilbert and the age-restricted communities around Mesa. If you are looking at the Sun Cities instead, see my West Valley list of hospitals near Sun City AZ.

Hospitals and medical campuses by city

These are the names that come up on tours. Each one was checked against the hospital system's own location page. Services, departments and hours change, so confirm details with the hospital before you rely on them.

Chandler

Dignity Health Chandler Regional Medical Center is on W Frye Rd in Chandler. It is a Dignity Health hospital, and some of Dignity Health's location pages now open on the CommonSpirit website.

Gilbert

Banner Gateway Medical Center is on N Higley Rd in Gilbert. Banner's own page lists a 24-hour emergency department. People often search for "Banner Gateway Mesa," but the campus address is in Gilbert.

Dignity Health Mercy Gilbert Medical Center is on S Val Vista Dr in Gilbert.

Mesa

Banner Desert Medical Center is on S Dobson Rd in Mesa.

Banner Baywood Medical Center is on E Baywood Ave in Mesa.

HonorHealth Four Peaks Medical Center is on S Crismon Rd in Mesa. It was formerly called Mountain Vista Medical Center, so you may still see the old name on older maps and paperwork.

Queen Creek

Banner Ironwood Medical Center is on N Gantzel Rd in Queen Creek.

Each system also runs outpatient clinics, surgery centers and specialty offices around the East Valley. A hospital campus is not the same as your primary care doctor, so look up clinics separately. I list names so you can research them. I do not say which one is best.

How the list lines up with East Valley 55+ communities

Sun Lakes. Sun Lakes buyers usually start with Chandler Regional in Chandler and then look at the Gilbert and Mesa campuses on the list.

Leisure World (Mesa). Leisure World buyers often ask about Banner Baywood first and keep Banner Desert, HonorHealth Four Peaks and Banner Gateway on a wider list.

Trilogy at Power Ranch (Gilbert). Buyers here tend to research the two Gilbert hospitals along with Banner Ironwood in Queen Creek.

Other Mesa 55+ communities. Buyers in the Mesa age-restricted neighborhoods usually start with the three Mesa hospitals and add more based on where their specialists practice.

Whichever community you choose, build your list around the doctors you want, not only around the community gate. Age-restricted (55+) rules for each community are in its CC&Rs. The Arizona 55+ living hub compares communities in more detail.

Setting up doctors when you move

A house can close faster than you can set up new medical care. Here is a practical order that works for many of my clients. It is not medical advice.

  1. Ask your current doctors how they transfer records and what they need from you.
  2. Use your insurance directory to find practices near you that are taking new patients.
  3. Ask each practice which hospitals its doctors work with.
  4. Book first visits once you have a local address and updated insurance cards.
  5. Save the main numbers from the official hospital websites in your phone.

If you plan a lock-and-leave home and spend summers elsewhere, ask the practice how it handles follow-ups for seasonal patients. My East Valley senior services list covers other local resources.

Medicare plan changes when you move, in general terms

I am not a Medicare advisor, and I help with the home, not the plan. Medicare Advantage and drug plan networks are local, so a plan that worked back home may not cover the East Valley hospitals listed above. Here is the general picture from Medicare.gov:

  • Moving out of your plan's service area, or to an address with new plan options, can open a Special Enrollment Period.
  • Medicare.gov says that window generally starts when you move and runs for 2 full months after. It can start a month earlier if you tell your plan before you move.
  • Before you choose, check which hospitals and doctors are in each plan's network.
  • Write down your move date, because the timing depends on it.

For the current rules, see Medicare.gov's Special Enrollment Periods page. You can also call the Arizona State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), part of the Arizona Department of Economic Security's Division of Aging and Adult Services, at 1-800-432-4040. A licensed Medicare advisor can also help.

Touring homes while you plan your care

Pick the home for how you live day to day. Single-level floor plans, a garage that opens into the house, step-free entries and a guest room for visiting family are features buyers ask me to filter for. A hospital name on a map is one piece of the decision, not the whole thing. Ask Terry for floor plans for any community on your list.
