I'm Terry Day, a REALTOR with DeLex Realty. A lot of the West Valley buyers I work with want to be close to a certain class: a chair stretch, a water aerobics session or a morning walking group. This guide shows what each city's website says it offers right now. The city's own page is the final word on schedules, because they change every season.

Surprise: senior center, fitness center and walking club

The City of Surprise's Senior Services page says the city serves its "50+ community" and runs a senior center for active independent adults and adults with disabilities. The same section links to enrichment classes, a lunch program, programs and activities, senior center memberships, and resource guides in English and Spanish.

The city's Fitness for Seniors page lists four options:

  • Instructor-led fitness classes
  • A morning chair stretch
  • A walking club
  • A city fitness center the page calls "state-of-the-art"

The page doesn't list class times or say where each one meets. Before your first visit, check the current senior center calendar or call the center. Ask whether the class requires a senior center membership.

For water exercise, the city's Aquatics section includes an Aqua Aerobics page and three pools. The Surprise Aquatic Center on N. Bullard Ave. has a competition pool and a diving well. Oasis Swim Center on N. Perryville Rd. has a heated 50-meter pool. Hollyhock Pool has a three-lane lap pool. Confirm which pool hosts aqua aerobics this season.

Peoria: Active Adults at the Community Center

Peoria's Active Adults page says adults "ages 50 and better" can join the activities offered at the Community Center throughout the year. It also says there is no membership fee and that programs are open to residents and non-residents.

The Health, Fitness & Nutrition section lists:

  • A fitness facility
  • SilverSneakers and Optum Health exercise classes
  • Zumba
  • Line dance
  • Yoga
  • Tai Chi Essentials

The page says the registration deadline is one week before the first day of a class, and some classes can be booked online through the city's RecConnect system.

The Active Adults page doesn't mention walking groups or water classes. If those matter to you, check Peoria's current recreation guide, or ask Community Center staff where those programs run.

Glendale: Adult Center and Foothills Recreation & Aquatics Center

The Glendale Adult Center at 5970 W. Brown Street is open to all adults ages 18 and up. A membership includes the fitness center, group exercise, classes and clubs, the card and game room, and the computer lab. The city lists these classes:

  • High-, medium- and low-impact aerobics
  • SilverSneakers Chair Yoga
  • T'ai Chi
  • Zumba Gold

The center offers day passes plus quarterly and annual memberships for residents and non-residents, with no joining fees or contracts. It also accepts the SilverSneakers, Silver&Fit and Renew Active programs. Ask your plan whether you're eligible. You sign up at the front desk, and everyone, day-pass visitors included, needs ID and has to fill out the required paperwork.

Foothills Recreation & Aquatics Center at 5600 W. Union Hills Dr. adds:

  • An indoor track for walking or jogging
  • A fitness center
  • Aerobics classes the city describes as "for all fitness levels"
  • A year-round outdoor heated pool used for lap swimming and water aerobics

Water aerobics times are posted in the city's aquatics calendar. The separate summer aquatics area is listed as closed for the season, with plans to reopen in 2027.

Walking programs and water exercise

Here is what each city's site lists for walking:

  • Surprise: A walking club, listed on its Fitness for Seniors page
  • Glendale: The indoor track at Foothills, which helps in the summer when walking outside is hard
  • Peoria: No walking program on the Active Adults page, so ask Community Center staff

For water exercise, Surprise lists aqua aerobics under its aquatics program and Glendale holds water aerobics at the Foothills heated pool. If water classes are your main reason to move, my guide to water aerobics in Sun City, AZ covers the recreation-center pools there.

How to join a class

Each city does paperwork differently, but the steps are about the same:

  1. Find the building that runs the class: a senior center, community center, adult center or pool.
  2. Check the age, residency and membership rules for that program. Peoria's Active Adults programs start at age 50, and the Glendale Adult Center is open to adults 18 and up.
  3. Check the registration deadline. Peoria asks for registration one week before a class starts.
  4. Bring ID. Glendale asks every Adult Center visitor for identification.
  5. Talk with your own doctor before you start a new exercise program. This page is general information, not medical advice.

I don't list costs, because they change. Check the current city page for the building you'll use.

House hunting near your favorite class

Buyers who care most about exercise often pick the center first and the floor plan second. Here's how I help with that:

  1. Tell me the class you care about. I'll focus the search on homes near the building that runs it.
  2. Visit the fitness room or pool during open hours, not just the model home.

Sun City and Sun City West bundle fitness into their recreation centers. These are age-restricted communities, and the rules are in the CC&Rs. Surprise, Peoria and Glendale use city-run centers instead, so the setup is different, but one isn't better than the other.
