Sun City, Sun City West and Sun City Grand each run their own pools, fitness centers and water exercise programs, and each uses its own resident card. Sun City West clubs hold water fitness sessions at three pools, and Sun City Grand heats all of its pools year-round.

Water aerobics and fitness at a glance

  • Sun City: Recreation Centers of Sun City (RCSC) runs the rec centers; an Aqua Fitness Club and a Swim Club operate there.
  • Sun City West: Four rec centers (Beardsley, Kuentz, Palm Ridge, R.H. Johnson), each with a fitness center and a pool.
  • Sun City Grand: Adobe (indoor and outdoor pools, fitness center) and Cimarron (outdoor pool, fitness center); all pools heated year-round.
  • Cards: Each community has its own card. One community's card does not open another community's pools.
  • Fees: Not listed here. Confirm with the club or rec center.

Water exercise is one of the most common reasons people ask me about the Sun Cities. The answer is never a single pool. Each community runs its own recreation system, and the class you want may meet at a center across town from the house you like. Here is what the official community and club sites say right now, and how to check the details yourself before you buy.

Sun City West: pools, fitness centers and water clubs

The Recreation Centers of Sun City West (RCSCW) health and wellness page lists four recreation centers, Beardsley, Kuentz, Palm Ridge and R.H. Johnson, and says there is a fitness center and a pool at each one. RCSCW also lists Fitness on Demand, a virtual class system at R.H. Johnson, and fitness classes and one-on-one training at each rec center.

Most water aerobics in Sun City West runs through chartered clubs. Three of them publish clear details on their club sites:

  • Water Fitness Club. Shallow-end water exercise set to recorded music, from gentle stretches to cardio. The club meets at Beardsley Pool (indoor), R.H. Johnson Pool (outdoor) and Palm Ridge Pool (indoor), with Palm Ridge morning weekday sessions running October through April. Members can attend as many sessions as they like without pre-registering. The club says people with a valid Sun City West Rec Card can try five sessions before joining.
  • Aquacizers. Low-impact pool workouts at Beardsley Pool, about 45 minutes of head-to-toe exercise followed by resistance and cool-down work with pool noodles the club provides. The club says a licensed physical therapist developed the program. Membership is open to residents with a valid SCW Rec Center Card.
  • Arthritis Club. A year-round program of gentle, controlled movements in the water at the Beardsley Recreation Center Pool, focused on flexibility and joint mobility.

The Sun City West Fitness Club also sponsors instructor-led classes, including land classes such as Zumba and water classes such as Deep Water Exercise and Dance Waves, held at RCSCW facilities and pools including Palm Ridge and R.H. Johnson. Schedules change by season, so check the club site before you plan a week around a class. Sun City Grand: Adobe and Cimarron

Sun City Grand in Surprise, which its community association now calls The Grand, has its own amenities, separate from both Sun City and Sun City West. The association's buildings page lists two pool and fitness locations:

  • Adobe Complex. A fitness center and pools, including an outdoor leisure pool, an outdoor lap pool with a hot tub, and an indoor leisure and lap pool with its own hot tub. Tennis, bocce, basketball and lawn bowling courts sit behind the pools.
  • Cimarron Center. A fitness center and an outdoor leisure and lap pool with a hot tub, plus outdoor pickleball courts. The association notes no children under 16 at this pool.

The association's pools page says all community pools are heated year-round, and members check in at a fitness center and show their Activity Card to use the pools. Children's hours for members' guests apply at the Adobe outdoor leisure pool, which matters if grandchildren visit. The official pages I reviewed do not list a water aerobics schedule, so ask the fitness center staff or the activities office about current water classes before you assume a schedule matches what you see in Sun City West. More on the community itself is on our Sun City Grand homes page.

Sun City: RCSC pools and the Aqua Fitness Club

In Sun City, the Recreation Centers of Sun City (RCSC) runs the rec centers, pools and fitness centers. RCSC lists an Aqua Fitness Club and a Swim Club of Sun City among its chartered clubs, along with land fitness clubs such as aerobics. Community listings say the Sundial Center has several indoor pools, including an exercise pool with a powered lift, and that the community also has outdoor pools at other centers.

The RCSC website did not load fully when I checked, so I am not listing club pools, class times or card rules for Sun City here. Before you commit to a routine, call the rec center or the club directly and ask which pool hosts the water class, when it meets, and what card or club membership it requires. Our moving to Sun City guide covers the community more broadly.

How to join a water class, step by step

The details differ by community, but the steps are similar:

  1. Confirm which recreation card you will hold. A Sun City West Rec Card, a Sun City RCSC card and a Sun City Grand Activity Card are three different things.
  2. Find the club or program that runs the class you want, and read its location and schedule page.
  3. Ask about trial visits. The Sun City West Water Fitness Club, for example, allows card holders five sessions before joining.
  4. Ask about guest rules if family will visit and want pool time.
  5. Check with your doctor before starting a new exercise program.

Home search tips for pool-first buyers

If the pool matters as much as the floor plan, start with the class, not the house. Tell me which club or pool you want, and I will focus the search on homes around that rec center. Visit the pool during open hours on a weekday morning, when many classes meet, so you see the real crowd and setup. If you also want an indoor pool for summer, compare the indoor options: Beardsley and Palm Ridge in Sun City West, Adobe in Sun City Grand, and, according to community listings, Sundial in Sun City.

All three communities are age-restricted 55+ communities, with occupancy rules set in their governing documents. Ask for the current CC&Rs and rec center rules on any home you are considering. To compare more options, see the Arizona 55+ living hub or use the 55+ community finder. You can also see all 55+ homes for sale on our search page.
