For West Valley senior services, start with the Area Agency on Aging, Region One and its 24-hour Senior HELP LINE at 602-264-4357. Then look at your own city's senior center and transit pages, such as the Surprise Senior Center and the Surprise RideChoice and Paratransit program, for classes, meals and rides.

Moving into a West Valley 55+ community is one project. Learning which local senior services exist is another. This is a starter list for new residents in and around Surprise, Peoria, Sun City and Sun City West. I am Terry Day, REALTOR® with DeLex Realty. I name organizations and link official sites only, and I do not rate programs. Confirm hours, eligibility and routes on each official site.

Start with the Area Agency on Aging, Region One

For Maricopa County, a central starting point is the Area Agency on Aging, Region One. Its 24-Hour Senior HELP LINE is 602-264-HELP (4357), toll free 888-783-7500, and it also lists a text line on its website. Ask about information and referral for older adults and caregivers, and how to reach local providers for the help you need.

I tell clients to save the HELP LINE number in their phones the first week after closing. It beats collecting flyers.

City senior centers

Surprise Senior Center. The City of Surprise runs a senior center for active independent adults aged 50 or better and adults with disabilities. The city lists enrichment classes, fitness for seniors, a lunch program, and activities from billiards, cards, dominoes and bingo to karaoke, themed dances and trivia. Membership details and a resource guide are on the city's senior services pages.

Peoria, Sun City, Sun City West and nearby cities. If you move to Peoria, El Mirage, Youngtown, Glendale or Goodyear, check that city's official recreation or senior services page rather than assuming Surprise programs cover you. In Sun City and Sun City West, the recreation centers and their chartered clubs fill much of the activity calendar. The Area Agency on Aging HELP LINE can point you to the nearest senior center for your address.

Rides and dial-a-ride

West Valley residents use a mix of fixed-route buses, ADA paratransit and city ride programs. In Surprise, the city's RideChoice and Paratransit program page covers ADA certified riders, veterans, Valley Metro paratransit and RideChoice taxi service. The city says certified ADA riders, seniors and others with disabilities can book dial-a-ride trips up to 14 days ahead, and same-day trips are open to other riders when space allows.

For other cities, start with Valley Metro and your city's transit page, and ask the HELP LINE what serves your exact address. Before you count on any ride program, check:

  • Who can ride: the general public, ADA-certified riders, seniors by age, or a mix
  • How far ahead you have to book
  • Whether medical trips outside your city are covered

How I use this list with new buyers

  1. Save the Area Agency on Aging HELP LINE during the inspection period.
  2. Look up your city's senior center page before closing.
  3. Check your city's transit or dial-a-ride page.
  4. Ask your 55+ community's association what clubs, volunteer groups or rides it offers.

That order prevents the first-month scramble after the moving truck leaves. I am not a social services caseworker; enrollment is between you and the agency or city program.

Tying services to your home search

Some buyers choose a 55+ community partly for the clubs and activities on site, with city services as backup. Others want a smaller home near a senior center they already toured. Browse options in the Arizona 55+ Living hub, the 55+ community finder and my lock-and-leave condos guide. Some resale listings carry FHA or VA loans that a qualified buyer may be able to assume, subject to lender approval.
