Tennis in Sun City AZ runs through the Sun City Tennis Club, open to RCSC cardholders, with courts at Bell and Mountain View recreation centers. Sun City West and Sun City Grand run their own separate tennis clubs and courts, so the recreation system tied to your address decides where you play.

Sun Cities tennis and racquet sports at a glance

  • Sun City: Sun City Tennis Club, open to current RCSC cardholders, with ten courts at Bell Recreation Center and two at Mountain View Recreation Center. Red Ball play is offered at Bell.
  • Sun City West: the Sun City West Tennis Club covers tennis, Red Ball tennis, platform tennis and table tennis, based at the R.H. Johnson Recreation Center, with tennis also at Kuentz Recreation Center.
  • Sun City West racquetball: the Racquetball/Whisperball/Badminton Club plays at R.H. Johnson Recreation Center.
  • Sun City Grand: the association lists 11 tennis courts, a resident-led Tennis Club and a Table Tennis group.
  • Pickleball is its own world in each community. See my pickleball guide for Phoenix 55+ communities.
  • Club dues and card fees change. Check each club's membership page; I do not list amounts here.

Three communities, three separate systems

Sun City, Sun City West and Sun City Grand sit close together in the northwest Valley, but each one has its own recreation system, its own card and its own chartered clubs. A Sun City (RCSC) card does not open the courts in Sun City West, and neither card opens the courts at Sun City Grand in Surprise. If tennis or racquet sports are a big part of why you are moving, start with the community, then the club, then the street.

What I tell clients: a house "by the courts" only helps if those courts belong to the same recreation system as the house. Name your sport first, then we shortlist homes inside the right community.

How newcomers find a game

The details differ by community, but the path is similar in all three:

  • Get the recreation card or resident access for your community first.
  • Find the tennis or racquet club on the official club page and read its membership information.
  • Show up for drop-in play or a Red Ball session. That is the fastest way to meet players at your level.
  • Learn the court reservation system before you try to book popular morning times.
  • Ask about round robins, leagues and social events once you join.

Tennis in Sun City

The Sun City Tennis Club says its membership is open to all current RCSC cardholders. Its home base is Bell Recreation Center, which has ten tennis courts, and the club also plays on two courts at Mountain View Recreation Center.

For newcomers, the club invites prospective members who hold an RCSC card to try the courts. The club lists drop-in play at Bell Monday through Saturday from 7 to 11 a.m., checking in with the court monitor, and at Mountain View Monday through Saturday from 8 to 10 a.m., signing in on the clipboard. Hours can change, so confirm on the club's site before your first visit.

The club also runs Red Ball, a modified, lower-pressure version of tennis developed by the USTA that uses only the service boxes, with modified rackets and balls. Red Ball games are held at Bell on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings, and the club lists a free lesson at those sessions. The club also lists evening play at Bell, including a Thursday coed group. The Sun City Independent reported in 2025 that the club celebrated resurfaced courts at Mountain View with a breakfast and an invitation to anyone with an RCSC card.

Tennis, platform tennis and table tennis in Sun City West

The Sun City West Tennis Club covers four sports: tennis, Red Ball tennis, platform tennis and table tennis. The club is based at the R.H. Johnson Recreation Center, 19803 R.H. Johnson Blvd., and lists tennis at the Kuentz Recreation Center, 14401 R.H. Johnson Blvd., as well. The club's tennis complex has four platform tennis courts, and new platform tennis players are welcome with instruction available. Table tennis is at the R.H. Johnson Activities Center, where the club lists four tables open seven days a week, for any skill level, except during scheduled club play.

The club sponsors regular drop-in tennis sessions. Its membership benefits page lists skill-level weekly round robins, tournaments, internal team events, outside leagues, free lessons and clinics, volunteer instruction in table tennis and platform tennis, and four general membership meetings a year. Tennis courts are reserved through the online booking link on the club's home page.

Racquetball in Sun City West

The Sun City West Racquetball/Whisperball/Badminton Club plays at the R.H. Johnson Recreation Center. The club says visitors with a valid SCW Rec Card are welcome, and its membership page says club members can book courts up to 72 hours ahead, while residents booking during open times can book up to 24 hours ahead. The Recreation Centers of Sun City West administrative office at the same address is 623-544-6120.

Tennis at Sun City Grand

Sun City Grand in Surprise runs its own association. Its amenities page lists 11 tennis courts and 22 pickleball courts, and its clubs page lists a Tennis Club, a Pickleball Club and a Table Tennis group among its resident-led clubs and interest groups. The association says chartered clubs have at least 100 members. For court locations, reservations and how to join the Tennis Club, the association's main line is 623-546-7500.

Treat Grand as its own system. Its schedules and rules do not match Sun City or Sun City West.

Pickleball and paddle sports

Many newcomers try tennis and pickleball in the same month. Pickleball has its own clubs and courts in each of these communities, and my pickleball guide for 55+ communities around Phoenix covers them. If you are new to paddle sports, see pickleball lessons in Sun City. For everything else on the club calendar, start with Sun City clubs and activities.

Buying tips for court-first buyers

  • Pick the sport and the entry point first: drop-in, Red Ball, clinic or reserved court time. Then we focus on homes in that community.
  • Visit during posted drop-in hours, not only on a quiet afternoon tour.
  • Ask whether club membership is needed on top of the recreation card.
  • Compare Sun City, Sun City West and Sun City Grand as separate systems.
  • All three are age-restricted communities with rules in their CC&Rs and association documents. Read them before you write an offer.

Who this kind of home fits, by features: a single-level home inside the community whose courts you will use, with garage room for a golf cart and gear. Who it does not fit: a buyer who expects one card to cover courts in all three communities. Some Arizona resales offer assumable FHA or VA loans, which is worth asking about; assumption is subject to lender approval.
