How the Pinal County Library District works

The Pinal County Library District serves all public libraries in the county. It trains affiliate library staff and provides shared materials, technology and professional services. The district's own FAQ says the eleven affiliate libraries are "affiliates, not branches," and it runs two district facilities, in San Tan Valley and Arizona City.

For you, that means a shared online catalog, events calendar and digital collections, but local rules. The district states that policies and procedures are set by individual libraries and may vary from location to location. Each library also has its own policy on which items it will lend to another library. When you place a hold, double check that the pick-up location is the library you actually use.

If you are still in the middle of a move, the district offers a Virtual Library Card for Pinal County residents. It opens research databases, cloudLibrary ebooks, hoopla streaming and OverDrive digital magazines, but it cannot be used to check out physical books or DVDs. For those, apply at your local library. Most ask for a valid photo ID and a document showing your current mailing address.

Casa Grande libraries

Casa Grande has two buildings and a Bookmobile. Casa Grande Main Library is at 449 N Drylake Street (520-421-8710), and Vista Grande Public Library is at 1556 N Arizola Road (520-421-8652). The city says a library card is free for anyone residing in Pinal County, with a photo ID and proof of address, such as a driver's license showing your current address or a photo ID plus a piece of mail.

Homebound service: Casa Grande offers Home Delivery and Books by Mail through its Bookmobile program. It is for Casa Grande residents who are restricted to their homes, temporarily or permanently, because of illness, disability or a related issue. The city notes that people who can drive are not considered homebound. To enroll, contact the Outreach Librarian at 520-421-8652 ext. 5014.

Classes: Tutor Tech Time is an in-person, one-on-one hour for adults 18 and up to learn whatever technology they want, from an iPhone to loading library ebooks onto a Kindle to Facebook and Instagram.

If you are looking at age-restricted (55+) neighborhoods in and around town, my Casa Grande 55+ communities page lays out the options. Each community's age rules are in its CC&Rs.

Florence: Viney Jones Library

The Town of Florence runs Viney Jones Library at 778 N. Main Street (520-868-8311). The town's library page lists hours Monday through Saturday and says the library offers a wide array of services and programs, but it does not post card rules or a homebound program. Call the desk to ask about delivery options. Viney Jones is the closest public library for buyers looking at Anthem at Merrill Ranch in Florence.

City of Maricopa: Maricopa Library & Cultural Center

The Maricopa Library & Cultural Center is at 18160 N Maya Angelou Dr. (520-568-2926). Cards are free for Pinal County residents age 4 and up, and you must prove Pinal County residency; a P.O. Box is not accepted. Cards renew in person with ID and proof of residency. The library uses the Pinal County catalog, events calendar and digital collections, and its interlibrary loan requests draw on district holdings. This is the library for Province in Maricopa.

Homebound service: the All Access program delivers print materials to adult City of Maricopa residents who cannot visit the library because of a permanent or temporary condition and have no other reasonable way to get materials. Apply by calling 520-568-2926 or emailing homebound@maricopa-az.gov.

San Tan Valley Library

San Tan Valley Library sits at 31505 North Schnepf Road, inside the Pinal County complex the county built in San Tan Valley. It is one of the district's own facilities rather than a city library. Programs post to the district events calendar. One example is Tech Bytes, a drop-in session where staff help you log into the library's ebook, audiobook, streaming and magazine apps on your own phone, tablet or e-reader. Buyers looking at Solera at Johnson Ranch will find this the nearest public library. Check the calendar for current sessions and ask the desk about delivery options.

Apache Junction Public Library and Gold Canyon

Apache Junction Public Library is at 1177 N. Idaho Rd. (480-474-8555). A full card with a 30-item limit is free for people who live in Pinal County, own property there, or work or attend school in Apache Junction; bring a photo ID and proof of your mailing and residential address. An Easy Access card with a 3-item limit is free to anyone with a photo ID. The library hosts free adult classes, lectures and other events each month, with support from the Friends of the Library.

Home Delivery Service: residents of Apache Junction or Gold Canyon who have trouble getting to the library because of disability, illness, impairment or transportation limits can get regular and large-print books, audiobooks on CD and Playaway, and magazines. Deliveries and pickups happen monthly on the third Thursday. Contact Outreach Services at 480-474-5498. The wheelchair-accessible Mobile Library also runs a monthly route across Apache Junction and Gold Canyon, including senior living stops. That makes it handy for MountainBrook Village in Gold Canyon.

Questions buyers ask

Does one Pinal County library card work at every library?
Not automatically. The district calls its eleven affiliates "affiliates, not branches," and each library sets its own card, lending and fine policies. You can search the shared catalog and request holds, but confirm the rules at the library where you will pick up.

What do I need to get a library card after I move?
Most libraries ask for a valid photo ID and a document with your current address, such as a utility bill. Maricopa does not accept a P.O. Box. A Virtual Library Card gives digital access while you wait.

Which Pinal County libraries deliver to homebound residents?
Casa Grande (Home Delivery and Books by Mail), the City of Maricopa (All Access) and Apache Junction (Home Delivery Service, which also covers Gold Canyon) all post a delivery program. Each limits it to its own residents and sets its own eligibility.

Do the libraries offer technology classes for adults?
Yes. Casa Grande offers one-on-one Tutor Tech Time for adults, San Tan Valley Library has hosted Tech Bytes drop-in help for library apps, and Apache Junction hosts monthly adult classes and lectures. Check each library's calendar for current dates.
