The communities button opens my guide to age-restricted (55+) and active adult communities in Goodyear and Buckeye.

Why I keep this list handy

I am a REALTOR, not a volunteer coordinator. Still, clients moving to the Southwest Valley often ask where they can give their time once they settle in. I point them to the official city, police, library and hospital pages below. If you are comparing other parts of the Valley, see my posts on volunteer opportunities in Surprise, volunteer opportunities in Sun City and volunteer opportunities in Mesa.

Living in an age-restricted (55+) community and volunteering are separate things. Age and occupancy rules for a 55+ community are in its CC&Rs. City and hospital volunteer programs have their own requirements.

Goodyear city volunteer program

The City of Goodyear's Volunteer Program page lists these areas:

  • Adopt-A-Park and Adopt-A-Street
  • Boards, commissions and committees
  • City office positions
  • Fire Corps/Fire Cadets
  • Spring Training
  • Special events and group projects
  • Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS)
  • Youth volunteer coaches

The city posts openings on its career page. It says only a limited number of the most qualified applicants are invited to interview, and selection includes a panel interview. For sensitive positions, the city may require a background check, substance abuse testing, an MVD check or fingerprinting. The Volunteer Coordinator's line on that page is 623-882-7567. The city's volunteer opportunities page also mentions monthly park clean-ups and Make a Difference Day.

Goodyear Police VIPS

Goodyear Police started Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) in 2004. The department lists these volunteer areas:

  • Administrative. Data entry, customer service, filing and spreadsheets.
  • Citizen Patrol. Uniformed volunteers in marked volunteer vehicles who support officers with tasks such as vacation watch and help at accident scenes.
  • Event support. Traffic and crowd control at city and department events such as parades and marathons.
  • Fingerprinting. Fingerprint cards for employment and certifications.
  • You Are Not Alone (YANA). Free phone calls and home visits for seniors with limited family or community contact.

The how to join VIPS page says volunteers must be at least 18, hold a valid Arizona driver's license with a good driving record, commit to at least 20 hours a month and pass a background check that includes a polygraph. The steps are an application, an interview and volunteer training. The VIPS office line is 623-882-7481.

Goodyear library volunteering

The Friends of the Library is a private nonprofit that raises funds and advocates for the Goodyear Branch of the Maricopa County Library District. The city page says the group is actively seeking volunteers and holds general membership meetings in May and September. The contact line listed is 623-451-1100.

Buckeye library and police volunteering

The Buckeye Library volunteer page describes sorting and shelving materials, prepping supplies for programs and helping with program setup and cleanup. Volunteers fill out the application before attending a volunteer information session.

Buckeye Police list VIPS on their community partnership programs page, and the page says the only current vacancies are with Citizen Patrol Units. Requirements listed there include being 18 or older, a valid driver's license, a background investigation and interview, and agreeing to a polygraph or drug test if the department asks. An April 2026 news story on InBuckeye says patrol volunteers work in two-person teams, patrol at least six hours a month, carry no weapons and receive uniforms and radio training. The program coordinator's line in that story is 623-349-6459.

Buckeye police volunteers also make the weekly calls in Buckeye Cares, a voluntary check-in program for local seniors. The program line is 623-349-6435.

The Buckeye Senior Center at 201 E. Centre Ave. offers fitness classes, outings, social programs and meals. Its page does not describe volunteer roles, so call 623-349-6600 to ask.

Avondale city volunteering

The Avondale Ambassador Program is a year-long program for Avondale residents 18 or older who pass a background check. Ambassadors host information tables at city events, share information about city programs and attend quarterly sessions and one public meeting a month. The page shows the application for the 2026 term closed in November 2025. Call 623-333-1013 to ask about the next window.

Avondale Parks and Recreation says it offers volunteer options for all ages and abilities and links to a full list of openings. Call 623-333-2400 or email activeavondale@avondaleaz.gov.

The Avondale Police VIPS page says VIPS is not accepting applications right now, while its Pets in Police Service (PIPS) program is. The Avondale library volunteer page I found is for teens only, so call the library at 623-333-2602 to ask about adult roles.

Hospital volunteering

Banner Estrella Medical Center asks volunteers to give about four hours a week, with a minimum of 100 hours within six months. Applicants go through an application, interview and background research that can take up to three weeks. Volunteers also help raise funds through the gift shop and special sales. Call 623-327-4019.

Abrazo Health says volunteers serve at all of its hospitals, lists Abrazo West among them and provides training, with day, evening and weekend shifts. Abrazo West Campus is at 13677 W. McDowell Rd. in Goodyear. Use the campus link on the Abrazo volunteer page to start.

How to sign up, in general terms

  1. Open the official page for the city, police department, library or hospital.
  2. Fill out the application or interest form the page links to.
  3. Ask about background checks, training and minimum hours before you commit.
  4. Start with one regular shift before adding a second group.
  5. Tell the coordinator up front about any months you travel.

How this ties to a home search

If you already know where you want to volunteer, start with that address and look at homes in that part of the Southwest Valley. Features clients mention include a single-level floor plan, a flex room or desk space, garage parking and a lock-and-leave yard for travel months.
